The Feed the Hungry program was very near and dear to father\u2019s heart and he spoke of it often.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Mom and Dad were <\/span>great world<\/span> explorers \u2013 they enjoyed Dad’s stint in the Navy as they got to see far corners of the world.\u202fI <\/span>don’t<\/span> think Dad ever lost his zeal for travel.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>They heard about San Miguel de Allende in 1979 and made their first trip around that time.\u202f<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> not sure of the date, but I remember that they went down for a month and ended up being gone for three months, only to return to make plans to visit again ASAP for six months!\u202fThey were in love with the small community of artists and musicians.\u202f At that <\/span>time<\/span> I think the number<\/span> was around 1,000 ex-pats and very few “<\/span>snow birds<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Early on, they became <\/span>very involved<\/span> in St. Paul\u2019s Episcopal Church in San Miguel.\u202fMom told me that in those early days there were three or four funeral processions a week on their street which led to the town center.\u202fMost often there were tiny coffins and weeping mothers.\u202fIt broke both her and Dad’s hearts to see this.\u202fAt some point they could no longer ignore or look the other way at the hungry, <\/span>sick<\/span> and suffering children and Dad quietly started the program.\u202fHe was very humble about this. In fact, I <\/span>didn’t hear<\/span> about it for many years.\u202f <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>After almost 20 years, the community of Americans in San Miguel swelled; many of the original group they had befriended had either moved back to the States or died.\u202fThey found solace in the fishing village of La Manzanilla.\u202fIn the late 1990s, Dad designed and oversaw the building of his dream home on the beach. They sold and left that area in 2004.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
